Located south of Italy, Malta is an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It joined the European Union in 2004 and became part of the Schengen Area in 2007. Malta is a member of both the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.

As a democratic state with a stable government, Malta consistently receives high ratings from major credit agencies and has some of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe.
